News Update - August/September 2011

Hi everyone!

The weather over the last couple of days here in Marlborough has been simply stunning, blue skies, no wind and yesterday we had a high of 21! It looks like it is going to be a continued pattern for the next few days. It is a far cry from the tempestuous weather of last week, snow, ice, and bitterly cold southerlies! It feels sooo incredibly good that spring is round the corner after such a dull wet cold winter, daffodils are popping up, there are lambs bouncing around the paddocks, and there is a real buzz in the air (along with the pollen) with the pending Rugby World Cup!! ( am I allowed to write Rugby World Cup?) Marlborough plays host to the Russian team, Здравствуйте to any Russians out there! Plenty of events happening in the region to entertain our visitors and locals over the next couple of months and one not to be missed is Marlborough Wine and Cuisine held on the 6th October, check it out here http://www.wine-marlborough.co.nz/MarlboroughWineandCuisine.

The boys are hard out in the winery busy riddling and disgorging bubbles in preparation for Christmas, most notably an up and coming new spring release of a Sparkling Riesling. This is made like all our bubbles in the traditional champagne method. It will be the perfect summer drink, aromas of orange blossom and creamy caramel come to mind with lovely fresh acidity, delish! More information to come on this fantastic wine and it will be released in September, so keep an eye on your inbox for some awesome spring specials! Josh tells me the wines presently in barrel from the 2011 vintage are coming along nicely, the chardonnays are getting batonage once a week, which is the stirring of the lees and with the weather warming up we may start to see the Malolactic ferment kick off in some of the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (fingers crossed). But just like cheese he tells me all good things take time!

Here in the vineyards pruning is just about completed with some tying down to be finished. We are a little later finishing than usual as the weather has been consistently wet and cold this winter and there is a general feeling that this could be the year of a late spring frost, so holding back bud burst would seem advisable just in case, along with a quiet prayer to the weather Gods!

This year we have used a Klima stripper for the first time and despite Dad’s (or big Al as he is affectionately called by the vineyard crew) scepticism it is a wonder machine by really taking the hard work of pulling the cut wines from the trellis. It is great to have technology working for us in the vineyard!!

Some exciting news to tell you that you may or not have heard is that we were really thrilled on the 9th June to welcome to the world Josh and Laura’s son George Eli Scott!! Welcome handsome boy!! Compared to the other Scott grandchildren he was a lightweight on arrival but has definitely made up for that maybe not in stature, but definitely in determination and cuteness! Josh being the only grandson on the Scott side was always under pressure to produce a son, mission completed; will he follow in his father’s footsteps and become a winemaker or master brewer? Either way let the Scott name continue!!

Speaking about boy’s Father’s Day is just around the corner and here at Allan Scott Family Winemakers we are looking forward to welcoming all the Dads on the 4th of September to Twelve Trees Restaurant. On the day we will have a ‘special’ dish created for dad as well as our current a la carte menu and as a special treat, a free MOA beer will be on offer for all the Dads!! So come on Mum and kids ring and make a booking 03 572 7123. We only presume that Dad would rather be out fishing or hunting or working on the car, really he is looking forward to a nice relaxing lunch with his family. We look forward to seeing you here! OR If you can’t bring him out to lunch and would like to organise or are looking for a perfect gift we have a great special
