Allan Scott Marlborough Pinot Noir 2008
The best adapted red variety for cool climatic conditions Pinot Noir is particularly suited to the Marlborough region. The aging of our vines and the greater understanding we gain as growers has enabled us to further develop our Pinot Noir style each year and the 2008 vintage is no exception, continuing our aim in developing our own distinctive style.
Viticulture
Two cane pruning, shoot removal, bunch thinning and leaf plucking are just some of the vineyard husbandry techniques to ensure concentrated flavours and desirable sugar levels.
Vinification
Hand sorted, destemmed, then crushed into open top fermenters the grapes were subsequently cooled rapidly. After cold soaking for colour extraction the must was warmed, then, with indigenous yeasts only, primary fermentation too place. During fermentation and the post ferment maceration process the cap is plunged several times daily to extract colour and flavour, until the must reached dryness. The wine is then left in tank to ‘post macerate’ on its skins. When the desirable flavour profile is reached the wine is pressed off, settled and transferred to a mixture of new and old French oak barriques. These barrels are put through full malolactic fermentation and left to mature and develop on lees.
Description
A rich dark fruit driven style with red cherries, raspberries and violets on the nose which marries well with the well integrated French oak and a creaminess from the malolactic fermention. Subtle smoky oak characters allowing the fruit to express itself with bright berry fruit flavours on the palate and a nice velvety finish
