Allan Scott ‘Prestige’ Pinot Noir 2001
This is the first time Allan Scott’s has released a Prestige Pinot Noir. Although the vines only have an average age of five years, if the vines continue to produce quality like this then we have a very bright future with this variety.
Viticulture
Pinot Noir is easily one of the most labor intensive wines in both the vineyard and winery.
After initially pruning to two canes in winter, the vines then have a host of other activities carried out to ensure a high quality. These techniques include; shoot thinning, leaf plucking, bunch thinning and then of course hand harvesting when the grapes are at their peak.
Vinification
All the grapes are hand-picked in the cool of the morning. The grapes are then promptly crushed, and then cold macerated in tanks for up to 7 days. Fermentation is then initiated, then a rigorous routine of hand plunging begins, four times daily, until the fermentation dies down. The grapes are then left to macerate in their skins for a further 10 days before they are barreled down into mainly New French Oak.
Description
A very powerful red fruit wine that has mainly ‘funky’ barnyard and leather characters. There is also a degree of spice that comes from the ripe fruit and New French Oak.
On the palate the wine is very rich in those red fruit characters, like cherries and plums.
It has a dry but very velvety finish, which is long lasting.
Serving Suggestions
A great wine with wild game or red meats. Also very enjoyable with a wide range of cheeses or just served on its own.
Serve at room temperature.
